Hate speech is not free speech due to the fact that it is unconstitutional. Free speech is not speech free from consequences. When we choose to express ourselves, we also choose to accept the consequences of that speech. An example of why hate speech is not free speech is because it can violate certain freedom of speech like slander and libel. Another example would be like a specific individual starts using fighting words against someone and that someone starts fighting that specific being. That specific being is then brought to court with that other person trying to defend themselves saying that,†My freedom of speech is protected by the first amendment.† However, the other person can argue that the first amendment does not protect his or†¦show more content†¦In the article,†Free Speech versus Hate Speech,† the author, Bruce Hartford, quotes,†I won’t defend hate speech that is clearly intended to intimidate and terrorize as a tool of oppr ession and discrimination-or to incite violence.† Bruce’s examples included â€Å"KKK rallies and speeches, cross burnings, torch-bearing parades, and horn-honking car caravans of heavily-armed, white-robed klansmen through Afro-American neighborhoods. By doing this, it enforces segregation through terror and to deter black men and women from challenging white-supremacy by doing to vote. This basically is a symbol of hate speech and that is not acceptable.Those klansmen are expressing the way they feel with beliefs and their opinions. Hate speech demeans the basis of race, gender, ethnicity, religion, age, disability, or any other similar ground is hateful.
